ガゴシアン・ギャラリーさんのインスタグラム写真 - (ガゴシアン・ギャラリーInstagram)「#MelekoMokgosi: "Democratic Intuition," Meleko Mokgosi’s first exhibition with Gagosian and first solo exhibition in the United Kingdom and Europe, closes today at our Britannia Street gallery in London. One of eight chapters in the epic project "Democratic Intuition" (2013-20), "Objects of Desire" are conceived as still life paintings, comprising image and text. Paintings of Afrocentric beauty advertisements, Paleolithic cave paintings, and contemporary African objects are interspersed with text panels, in which museum wall labels and excerpts from scholarly publications receive Mokgosi’s own critical commentary to underscore the cultural biases and omissions in the original texts. His detailed annotations challenge the Western impulse to instrumentalize African artworks as anonymous sources for early European Modernism.
