Marlana Thompson—a Mohawk (Wolf Clan) bead artist and regalia maker—created this face mask with black velveteen and seed beads. Her mask titled "Ononkwashon: a/Medicine Plants" depicts strawberries, white pine and cedar, along with three skydomes representing prayers for her three children. “C-19, 2020” acknowledges the COVID-19 pandemic.
It's one of three face masks created by Indigenous women artists in response to the pandemic that have been collected by our @americanart, as the Smithsonian documents not just the past, but also our present.
Today, 10 of our museums and cultural centers are hosting “24 Hours in a Time of Change” to take a snapshot of this moment in history.
We invite you to join us in this effort by reflecting on and sharing your experiences. Visit 24hours.si.edu today to share how your life has change during this tumultuous time.
Throughout the day, we're offering virtual programs centered around contemporary issues, from the COVID-19 pandemic to racial injustice. Watch online at the link in our bio. #Smithsonian24Hours
