We remember U.S. Air Force Gen. Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager. On October 14, 1947, Yeager piloted this Bell X-1 to reach a speed of 700 mph (Mach 1.06), becoming the first pilot to fly faster than sound.
The X-1 proved an aircraft could break the sound barrier. It also gathered transonic flight data that is still valuable.
Our @airandspacemuseum now has the XS-1 #1, serial 46-062, named "Glamorous Glennis" by Yeager in honor of his wife.
