Made in Japan between 1660–1690, these colourful porcelain elephants are examples of the Kakiemon style of ceramics made in Hizen province in southern Japan.
The style typically had cream-coloured bodies and brilliant enamel colouring, and the ceramics proved fashionable for the wealthy in late-17th-century Europe.
Fine quality porcelain models, including dogs, cats, deer, boar, and horses were made for export as ornamental pieces for European mantels.
From dolphins to dung-beetles, you can find out more about animals in the collection at britishmuseum.org/animals.
