​This painting, made by Félix Vallotton in 1922, shows the French town of St Paul, a short distance from Cagnes where Vallotton often spent the winter months. The artist conjured a sense that something mysterious lay beneath his scenes: 'I paint for people who have an unspoken voice deep inside them,' he once remarked.
