Photos by @celestesloman This portrait of 19-year-old activist Winter Breeanne is from a series of portraits celebrating the centennial of women's suffrage for National Geographic's August issue. Timed with the anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which guarantees and protects women's constitutional right to vote, the project highlights people who are bridging the gap between the past and future of women's rights. Winter is a youth advocate, organizer, and student from California. She founded an organization called Black Is Lit, which focuses on creating space for marginalized youth, and she also started a program called Power of Future Voters that is devoted to inspiring students to participate in civic engagement.
