Today in 1912: Jim Thorpe won the Gold Medal in the pentathlon at the Olympics. However, the International Olympic Committee revoked his medal for violating the Olympic ban on professional athletes—a rule that was unevenly enforced and, in Thorpe's case, smacked of racism.

This was not Thorpe's first experience with racism. A member of the Sac and Fox Nation, he had been sent to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. Indian boarding schools were an explicit tool of those who sought assimilation to “civilize” Native youth by stripping them of their indigenous identities.

While in Carlisle, Thorpe was a two-time All American football player. Following his Olympic victory, he played Major League Baseball and played professional football and helped organize a forerunner to the NFL. He is considered one of the greatest athletes in U.S. history.
