Before becoming a Supreme Court Justice, Marshall had a long legal career fighting for Civil Rights. In 1938, he took over the leadership of the NAACP legal team and a year later, he established the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund to carry out the organization’s legal campaign.     Marshall argued several cases in front of the Supreme Court, including Shelley v. Kraemer (which addressed discrimination in housing), Smith v. Allwright (which challenged white-only primaries), and Brown v. Board of Education (which addressed segregation in public schools and the precedent of "separate but equal.")     When Marshall was confirmed as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1967, he was the first Black justice to join the court.
