Video by @Joel Sartore I In Rwanda, the gray crowned crane is a symbol of wealth and longevity, which has often led to the birds being kept in captivity by hotels and wealthy families who are unaware of the negative impacts of doing so. Captive cranes are usually stressed, malnourished, and unable to fly or breed, with many dying prematurely. The Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association, led by National Geographic explorer Olivier Nsengimana, is working to reverse the declining trend by putting an end to the illegal wildlife trade. In collaboration with the Rwandan government, RWCA called for Rwandans to declare that captive cranes be registered and regularly monitored. Healthy captive cranes are confiscated, quarantined, and later released back into the wild. To date, over 150 cranes have been reintroduced. Video taken @columbuszoo.
