My favorite African story is that of the two man-eating lions, “The Ghost” and “The Darkness”. Near the turn of the 20th century, the British were building a railway through Tsavo, which is located in southeastern Kenya. During the construction of a bridge across the Tsavo River, the workers were constantly hunted by two lion brothers. Some accounts say the lions killed 20-35 workers while others say they took over 100+ workers. While these two brothers I photographed in the Mara were in a much more relaxed and non-hunting mood, they reminded me about this tale that haunted the minds of many just over a century ago. No one is quite sure why the lions attacked the workers so much, but some have suggested it was a result of a lack of prey in the area due to overhunting from humans. You can still see these lions today, as the the two brothers are still on display in the Chicago Natural History Museum in Illinois.
