During the American invasion in World War Two, over three hundred local civilians were forced by Japanese soldiers to commit suicide here. Families were given hand grenades and instructed to blow themselves up, the first of what became a tragic series of mass suicides enforced by the Japanese military on the people of Okinawa.The changing meaning of place over time is a key theme of my book, DISPOSABLES.
