This week in 1943: The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) was established. These women flew a total of 60 million miles in military aircraft, but were considered civilians, and were not granted military benefits or burials. The WASP were granted military status retroactively in 1977. They were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.
Women pilot trainees wore patches like this one. Disney artists designed patches for military units—including this one. (The artists provided insignia to almost 1,300 units in the U.S. armed forces.) This patch was handmade by one of the pilots-in-training.
This patch features Fifinella, who, according to British Royal Air Force pilot lore, Fifinella was one of many winged gremlins that played havoc with their airplanes. Roald Dahl popularized Fifinella’s story in 1943 in his book “The Gremlins.” “The Gremlins” featured illustrations by Disney, who was given rights to the characters.
