Aimee Elkington embroidered her first patch for this quilt when she was twelve years old, in 1877. Her crazy patchwork (the name of the style) accompanied her throughout her life. In 1946, she stitched her twenty-five completed blocks together, but died before she could add the border she had planned as the finishing touch. (Swipe ➡️ to see the back of the quilt.) We’ve been counting down to the opening of our “Everyday Luxury” exhibition, which opened today and features silk quilts like this one. Everyday Luxury is made possible by the generous support of the Barbara Coffey Quilt Endowment and Ambassador Nicholas F. Taubman and Mrs. Eugenia L. Taubman. 🧵
From the 1870s through the 1920s, silk thread and fabric manufacturing flourished in America. Competition within the industry lowered prices. Quiltmakers, inspired by new ideas about art and craft and newly inexpensive silks, created works of individual imagination and skill like these. The quilts also represent thousands of mill workers, and hundreds of companies, business people, and designers who built and nurtured America’s silk industry.
