Not long after this was taken, we were slammed by a wall of hail so heavy you could hear the roar as it drew closer. The noise was so strange that no one in the group knew what it was until it was nearly upon us, pummeling the landscape. I can’t even begin to imagine what animals go through in these conditions; the pain must be excruciating in moments like this. Weather on the plains is erratic and explosive, from tornados to lightning to baseball-size hail. Life in the Midwest is extraordinary and often raw. It’s in these conditions, however, in which a unique, fleeting beauty lives and why #stormChasing is such a visual treasure hunt.
