Photo by Kirsten Luce @kirstenluce | While photographing the June 2019 cover story about captive-wildlife tourism, I met countless animal lovers who paid to touch and pose with wild animals in foreign countries with little to no understanding of the bigger picture. More often than not, these animals are subjected to abusive training in order to make them docile enough to interact with tourists each and every day. A cherished digital souvenir for a tourist often means a very poor quality of life for the animal. I’m honored to be speaking about this story at Explorer’s Festival at National Geographic this week. #natgeofest
