This Bata Cubana, or Cuban Rumba dress, belonged to Celia Cruz, the "Queen of Salsa." 🎤
Born in 1925 in Havana, Cuba, Celia Cruz built a musical career that spanned six decades and took her from Cuba to the United States. As a performer, Cruz was known internationally for her piercing and powerful voice and larger-than-life personality and stage costumes. 💃🏽 The Bata Cubana was Cruz's preferred performance costume. This particular piece was made in the United States by Cuban-born designer José Arteaga. The Bata Cubana style-dress has its roots in the 1800s, with origins as diverse as the multicultural makeup of the people of Cuba. It brings together influences from Spanish, French, and African cultures and dress. 👗
Have you listened to Cruz's music? If so, you'll recognize her catch phrase: "Azúcar!" #AmericanHistory #MusicHistory #EntertainmentHistory #LatinxHistory #CubanAmericanHistory #CubanHistory
