Photos by @RichardBarnes | One of the most engaging stories for me personally that I have done for National Geographic was on an archaeological excavation of "proto" whales buried beneath the Egyptian sand of what used to be the shallow waters of the Thetys ocean.
I spent several weeks working with the paleontologist Philip Gringerich in Egypt, (our dig house, seen here, actually resembled a whale), and at his lab at the University of Michigan where he carefully removed the outer layer of sand and mud from the fossilized bones of several extinct whale species from as far back as 65 million years ago.
I learned that whales once walked on land and at some point, for whatever reason, made the decision to return to the sea. One can still see the vestiges of tiny limbs on modern whales. It was surreal to be excavating extinct whale species from the desert floor. many, many miles from the sea. #thevalleyofthewhales #wadihitun #egyptianwhales #whales #richardbarnesphotography
