There is not much left of the wall in this area, as much of the original wall, built of rammed earth and reeds, has succumbed to the elements and time. The message on the sign — 人民公路为人民 — roughly translates to “people’s road for the people,” echoing a slogan from the Mao Zedong-era about the Silk Road. Isn’t it ironic that the Great Wall, which never did a very good job of keeping out the nomadic tribes to the north, is now being used to attract tourists. #greatwall #Gansu #Dunhuang
