Photo by Daniella Zalcman @dzalcman | A team of predominantly Native students and professors from Salish Kootenai College in Montana take a quick lunchtime break. They spent three weeks in Glacier National Park this summer conducting a scarred tree survey along the North Fork of the Flathead River. The study examines scarred trees (where the cambium layer of bark was cut away for use as food) as a means of looking at historic periods of starvation in Native populations. Perhaps more importantly, according to the two professors leading the program (Aaron Brien and Dean Nicolai), it also allows Native archaeologists to examine and reframe Native history from an Indigenous perspective. @indigenousarchaeology
