Photo by Daniella Zalcman @dzalcman | Jim Stamper, 66, has been a loyal Cleveland Indians fan since 1959. He's become a recognizable personality around the ballpark, since he usually goes to games with larger-than-life cutouts of Chief Wahoo that bear different messages depending on the season and the team's performance. Starting in 2019, Wahoo will officially vanish from Progressive Field. The logo will no longer appear on player uniforms or stadium signage, but the team will continue to sell Wahoo memorabilia in its stores, and it won’t stop the fans from coming to games wearing the logo — which, with its exaggerated grin, hooked nose, and tomato-red skin, has been widely criticized for being a racist caricature. This is part of my first story for @ナショナルジオグラフィック on the appropriation of Native imagery and identity, out now in the December issue.
