Photo by @Joel Sartore | You are looking at a one-year-old female Eurasian red squirrel who currently resides at @wildwoodtrustuk and is destined for release back into the wild in Wales. Once released, she will be monitored by scientists and tracked with a radio collar to make sure she thrives. This species is protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, yet habitat loss and the spread
of disease is causing a population decline. Wildwood Trust has joined forces with a number of conservation organizations to combat this trend and has successfully bred and released red squirrels into the wild. These reintroductions are helping to safeguard
