In the 1960s, The Black Arts Movement emerged as the cultural wing of the the Black Power Movement and visual artists like #FaithRinggold drew on the languages of Pop art and realism to depict the oppression faced by Black people as viscerally as possible. Ringgold also engaged in art world activism, joining the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition to advocate for greater representation of African American artists and curators in New York City museums. #soulofanationbkm ⠀
