Opening today, "Syria, Then and Now: Stories from Refugees a Century Apart" recounts the changing stories of refugees in Syria over time and places their differing experiences in a global context. The exhibition presents thirteenth-century Ayyubid ceramics that were unearthed in Raqqa, Syria, by the Circassian refugees, who were searching for bricks to build homes. The plight of current-day Syrian refugees is the focus of three contemporary artists—Mohamad Hafez (@mohamad_hafez), Issam Kourbaj (@issamkourbaj) and Ginane Makki Bacho (@ginanemakkibacho)—whose work is also on view. See #SyriaThenandNow today through January 13.

Small Vase. Raqqa, Syria. Ayyubid period, 13th century. Ceramic. Brooklyn Museum; Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Frederic B. Pratt, 36.944.
