Today is our birthday! ? The Smithsonian was officially created on August 10, 1846, and one of the first things on the to-do list was constructing a building.
This 1850 glass lantern slide is the earliest-known photo of our Smithsonian Institution Building, known as the Castle, and the only image we have of it under construction. Only two of the Castle’s nine towers were completed—if you look closely, you can see a crane rising over the North Tower.
Our Smithsonian baby photo, taken by William and Frank Langenheim, is on display in the Castle.
