☀️ Can you feel the sunshine in this mural miniature "El Sol" (the sun) by modernist painter Joan Miró? The 1948 piece in our @cooperhewitt shows his use of simplified, stylized forms and a limited color palette.
Miró and other artists were commissioned by New York wallpaper manufacturers Katzenbach & Warren to create an original work of art that would be reproduced in limited edition silk screen prints.
Many firms were hurting financially after World War II (when their materials were directed to the war effort) and they turned to renowned artists to challenge consumers' ideas of wallpaper as old and stodgy.
The full mural was 4 by 6 feet—large enough to fill a wall—and the miniature is just about 12 by 17.5 inches.
