Maria Mitchell taught her students to shoot with the stars—with this sextant. The trail-blazing astronomer, born 200 years ago on August 1, was one of the first professors at Vassar College.
Mitchell would break curfew and hold classes in the middle of the night so students could actively observe astronomical objects. She helped her students publish, and travelled 2,000 miles with former students to study a total solar eclipse. She also brought guest speakers to discuss politics and women's rights. "If it were only possible to tell you of what Professor Mitchell did for one of her girls!" recalled one student. "It meant so much to come into daily contact with such a woman!" This sextant—an instrument to measure the distance between two astronomical bodies—may have been used by Mitchell and her students.
