Blunt-headed tree snakes have GIANT hypnotizing eyes, are mildly venomous, slow moving, and spend most of their lives high up in the rainforest canopy. As I cradled these impossibly slender snakes in my hands, it instantly became clear that although they were the same species - they seemed to be nothing alike. One of the snakes curled into her own coils on my warm skin (‘Oooh this is nice!’). The other refused to be still and kept searching, launching her body out, and flicking her tongue (‘Let me go! Let me GO!’). With one face hidden and the other always moving, it was almost impossible to photograph these two bug-eyed blunt-head tree snakes. But one trick I’ve learned with snakes over the years is that if I cup my hands over them and wait a few minutes, they will calm down. When I did this, I could feel In the space between my palms that both were dozing. When I opened my hands the two bodies had intertwined, but in fact nothing had changed: one of the snakes was still instantly ready to move. The more sleepy (or lazy) of the two seemed to turn to the other as she left and ask, ‘Where are you going, it is nice in here!’. The nuances in animal behavior, even within the same species, never cease to amaze me. These two little snakes could not have had more different personalities.
