While on assignmetnt in Japan I met Mr Tanaka, a homeless man living in a plastic tent by the Arakawa river near Horikiri station, Tokyo.
He told me he used to be a sailor and later worked as a construction worker for Nagano Olympic before he ended up in Tokyo.
There used to be about 60-70 homeless people living here but most of them left a few years ago. During days he listens to the birds humming, playing his guitar with three strings and taking care the flowers. At night he is afraid of children attacking him with golf balls and fireworks, which had happened in the past, so he sleeps in his clothes in case he needs to run.
