Spitsbergen is the largest and only permanently populated island of Svalbard. Svalbard (the land with the cold shores) has given rise to legendary stories about hunting, trapping, mining and incredible expeditions. The archipelago is one of the only places on earth where rocks from practically every geological period may be found within a limited area. Svalbard is a fragile arctic habitat home to breeding ground for many seabirds, and also features polar bears, reindeer, the Arctic fox, and certain marine mammals.
