These height-defying castells (human towers) exemplify a spirit of optimism and participation in public life found throughout Catalonia, a region in northeastern Spain.
That same energy can be found in the “#Catalonia: Tradition and Creativity from the Mediterranean” program at the 2018 @smithsonianfolklife Festival. As team members brace against one another, lifting each other to greater heights, the resulting structures rest on tight-knit social relationships that make the many into one.
