Prepare for #Bloomsday with this portrait of James Joyce, taken by Berenice Abbott six years after "Ulysses" was published. June 16 had already been commemorated as Bloomsday—for the 1922 novel's main character Leopold Bloom—and it’s still celebrated in Dublin and around the world.

During the 1920s, Abbott was one of the premier portrait photographers of Paris. The American expat enjoyed the company of some of the great 20th-century writers and artists, photographing individuals such as Jean Cocteau and Peggy Guggenheim.
Abbott didn't want to enhance or interfere with the sitter, but have her subject's personality dictate the form of the photograph.
