Photo by @anandavarma. This is a spectral bat, also known as a Linnaeus' false vampire bat. With a three foot wingspan, it is the largest bat in the Americas and it is carnivorous, meaning it eats small mammals, birds, and other bats. It uses its hooked "thumbs" to attack its prey. I photographed this female inside a flight cage in Mexico as part of an @ナショナルジオグラフィック assignment on carnivorous bats. I worked closely with Rodrigo Medellin (@rodrigomedellin1223) whose team is working to understand the biology of these poorly understood creatures.
