This federally endangered Asiatic golden cat was photographed at the @assamzoo. The most common coat color is golden or red brown but the cat photographed here is melanistic, meaning black in color, which is rare. The Asiatic Golden Cat is primarily found in forested areas, particularly tropical and subtropical moist evergreen forests. Little is known about the ecology and behavior of the asiatic golden cat and more research is essential to understanding this species and implementing conservation. As a forest dependent species, it’s threatened by habitat loss throughout it's range. Although deforestation rates in Southeast Asia have slowed some, they are still among the highest in the world. In addition, the species is threatened by increasing levels of illegal hunting and poaching for consumption, and for the sale of pelts and body parts.
