Photo by @Cory Richards // Captured #withGalaxy S9 using Pro Mode, produced with @samsungmobileusa // The Bonneville Salt Flats, a remnant of the Pleistocene Lake Bonneville, is the largest of a number salt flats located just west of what is now the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The prehistoric Lake Bonneville was a pluvial lake covering a portion of the eastern Great Basin, forming around 500 million years ago. At 19,691 sq miles and 1,000 ft deep it was similar in size to Lake Michigan, but significantly deeper until the Bonneville Flood which released much of the water through the Red Rock Pass around 14,500 years ago. The Great Salt Lake, Utah Lake, and Sevier Lake are the largest remnants of what was, while the salt flats are the dry lake bed covered in a thick layer of salt stretching for miles.
