Photo by @amivitale. Mary Lengees, one of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e)’s first women keepers stays with Suyian, the sanctuary’s very first rescue. Suyian was rescued in September 2016, when she was just four weeks old. In the first days that an elephant arrives, keepers stay with the orphans around the clock to offer comfort and be sure that the calf gets any medical attention and love he or she needs.

As the first ever community owned and run sanctuary in all of Africa, @r.e.s.c.u.e provides a home for elephant calves orphaned due to poaching, human wildlife conflict and drought related causes. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is as much about the people as it is about elephants.
