In mid-March, there’s an incredible event held at the Aso Shrine called the ‘Hifuri-Shinji’ Festival, which is designated as one of Japan’s Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties. Locals gather to pray for a bountiful harvest, and to celebrate a divine wedding between two gods—one of farming, the other a divine princess, who are both said to reside at the shrine. Ropes of straw are set on fire and swirled around and around, creating an otherworldly ring of fire around the performers. It’s an incredible spectacle to behold, but the general public also has a chance to participate in this enduring part of Japanese tradition!
