This is a photo of the inaugural winter of the newly christened Akan-Mashu National Park (formerly Akan National Park)! Renamed in August 2017, Akan-Mashu National Park is one of Hokkaido’s oldest, and is renowned for the crystal-clear waters of its many caldera lakes, created by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. In winter, Lake Kussharo, Lake Akan, and Lake Mashu freeze over completely.
