Smile for the camera! ?

Addison Scurlock and his sons Robert and George ran Scurlock Studio in Washington, D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood from 1911 through 1994. Taking thousands of photographs, the studio documented what life was like in Washington’s African American community in the 20th century. From weddings to funerals, at war, at work, and at play: Scurlock Studio was there.

Today, our Archives Center holds both Scurlock Studio business records, as well as approximately 250,000 photographs from the studio. Here are a few of our favorites, including one of Addison Scurlock behind the camera.
