All that glitters isn’t gold. . .but every once in a while it is! 170 years ago today, James W. Marshall noticed something glittering in the water at Colonel John Sutter's sawmill in California. According to Sutter's diary, Marshall stooped down to pick it up and "found that it was a thin scale of what appeared to be pure gold." Marshall bit the metal as a test for gold. His discovery helped spark the California gold rush.
This gold nugget is believed to be what Marshall found—the gold nugget that led hundreds of thousands of people to descend on the California territory from across the continent. . .and across oceans.
While the California gold rush may be the nation’s first gold rush, it wasn’t the first. Learn more on our blog (link in the bio). #GoldRush #CaliforniaHistory #CaliforniaGoldRush #RareMetal #CAHistory #FinanicalHistory #NationWeBuildTogether
