Video by @Joel Sartore | In the high ranges of the Andes, from southern Ecuador through Peru and Bolivia, to northern Argentina and Chile, you might get lucky enough to see a mountain caracara soaring above. Though their wings appear almost completely black while perched, they reveal striking, large white bands when viewed from underneath during flight. They’re highly opportunistic birds, commonly seen foraging on the ground for carrion, rodents, and insects. Interestingly, mountain caracara have also been known to use group foraging methods while searching for food. This technique can be helpful in situations where a large rock needs to be turned over. However, most of the time only the bird who decides on which rock to turn is allowed to feed on the prey that is found.
