Imagine watching the attack on Pearl Harbor unfold. Teacher Beth Slingerland could see the the destruction from her home in the hills above the harbor. Her husband, John, was a hammerhead crane operator working at the naval base. She didn’t know if he was ok or not.
During the surprise attack, nearly 200 Japanese planes flew over Pearl Harbor, dropping bombs and raining gunfire. While she watched, Beth wrote letters describing what she saw. We recently collected and digitized her dramatic letters and you can read excerpts on our blog: http://s.si.edu/BethS (Click the link in our profile.) Shown here, a pin from World War II, the envelope for one of Beth’s letters, and part of one of her letters. The attack by Japanese warplanes on Pearl Harbor took place 76 years ago today. ?? #PearlHarbor #WorldWar2 #WorldWarII #PrimarySources #WomensHistory #HawaiiHistory #VintageJewelry
