What do these mining photos have to do with Instagram? More than you might think.
Today when we want to experience how other people live, we check Instagram. In the 1800s, the process was a little more complex.
The @スミソニアン博物館 hired photographer George Bretz in the 1880s to photograph the Kohinoor Mine at the Shenandoah Colliery in Pennsylvania for the 1884 World’s Fair in New Orleans. The photographs not only revealed the hard work of mining to those who never set foot in a coal mine—the pics also fascinated the miners themselves. Instead of only seeing what was illuminated by the lights on their helmets, the lighting used to take the photographs allowed the viewer to see more of a coal mine than many miners saw in a lifetime.
