Life is tough for a female Southern Sea Lion. After giving birth, females must return to the sea to feed before coming back to nurse their pups. During their journey, they might be attacked by orcas, which is quite likely what happened to this one. As they head back to land, large males are waiting to intercept them with the intention of mating, before letting them go to find their pup. A male might have as many as 20-30 females in his harem, and he zealously protects his territory from any other males…and indeed from anything or anyone, including photographers. #Follow my #instagram account to learn more about this amazing archipelago in the southern seas.
