On this day (15 May) in 1988 Soviet troops began their withdrawal from Afghanistan after 8 years of bloody conflict… Photographed years later Soviet-era cluster bombs scattered like fossils at a child’s feet in the grounds of an Elementary School. Walking Afghanistan's fields and streets can be like passing through a museum of the archaeology of war - different moments of destruction lie like sediment on top of each other.
