In 1699 influential scientific illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian travelled to Suriname in South America from the Netherlands to document new species of plants, insects and animals. This work shows ‘a Surinam caiman fighting a South American false coral snake’. Merian travelled with her daughter, and together they made extensive notes and sketches, collected dried plants, and animals preserved in alcohol. She published her work on Surinamese insects in 1705. #MariaSibyllaMerian #BritishMuseum
