This amazing gold chariot model was made around 500–300 BC in Central Asia. It was found near the Oxus River, in modern Tajikistan, with over 180 other objects – the find is known as the Oxus Treasure. The tiny chariot and charioteers are finely detailed, with textured clothing, miniature emblems and harnesses on the horses.

Swipe right ➡️ to see the X-rays our scientists used to discover how this intricate model was made, which confirmed that the figures and horses were hollow. They also found that the wheels were connected by a complex system of gold wires that were looped together under the chariot – this was hidden by flower-shaped gold sheets either side of the wheels. X-rays can reveal a lot about objects in the collection – how they were constructed, what may be inside them, and if they have been repaired over time.
