This stunning ancient Greek necklace was made around 300 BC, and found in Italy. It’s an impressive piece of craftsmanship, and is made entirely from gold. Our scientists use a scanning electron microscope to find out how jewellery like this was made thousands of years ago, and any secrets it may hold. This allows them to zoom in and see the structure of materials in fine detail. The necklace was found to be a pastiche – half is original, and half a 19th-century reconstruction! These microscope images showed scientists the manufacturing methods used in the necklace – we can see how the gold wires in the original part were made from strips of gold twisted into a wire.
