A Weddell seal, named after James Weddell, the British sailing captain that explored the southern seas in the 1820s, twitches and grunts in its sleep as I try to not wake it up with my giggles. Along with so many other wonderful animals, these seals depend on the icy conditions of the Antarctic Peninsula, where a balance between predators and prey still exists, and where we still have a chance to ensure the fragile relationship between humans and wildlife, one that was imperiled by years of whaling and seal slaughters, remains intact. We have a chance of protecting these seas in perpetuity. #Followme at @Cristina Mittermeier and @SeaLegacy to see how the deliberations to create a new Marine Protected Area in this part of the ocean play out.
