Choosing an #OOTD like ??? In “Venus of the Rags,” (1967) Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto pairs an iconic motif of Western art—the figure of Venus, the Roman goddess of love, beauty and fertility—with a pile of old clothes.
The juxtaposition of hard and soft, historical and contemporary, sacred and cast-off demonstrates Pistoletto’s desire to incorporate all aspects of life in his art and remove a hierarchy of “traditional” art materials. It’s a goal characteristic of the Arte Povera movement, of which he was a central figure. Pressed up against an enormous mound of rags, Pistoletto’s goddess suggests cycles of consumption and the mass commodification of culture.
