I want to share my story... Being born Japanese and Italian with an American citizenship (we won't even mention the jazz parents to fuel the quirkiness of my childhood...) in '63 and growing up in rural Japan as well as NY and LA, I've had my share of prejudice from both sides: in Japan, old people spitting on me because to them I represented a war brat (which I wasn't...but that doesn't matter) and school mates bullying then telling me they couldn't play with me because I was mixed race, and in America being mistaken as Mexican and given second class treatment and generally treated as an outsider in school. I remember in my adulthood, as recent as a couple decades ago, being in Queensland Australia where the sales staff of a shop refused to serve me (probably mistaking me for the many Asian refugees in their country) and instead serve everyone else (all white...) who clearly came after me while giving me the side eye. There were many other such stereotypes placed on me by people who assumed one thing or other about my race and existence and, through their ignorance, have treated me unkindly. I don't write this to whine and play victim because I have also so many great memories of people with compassion and gentle hearts throughout the world for which I have infinite gratitude, but rather to mention why it is with horror and great sadness I feel to witness what is going on in our present day with these unthinkable bans and restrictions on Muslims and immigration policy just placed here in the U.S. This is not us. I post this because there is so much anger, frustration, stress...so much negativity, and we are becoming more and more divided; this picture to me represents the freedom of overcoming other people's negative agendas, of joy and happiness. I'm proud to have been born the year MLK organized the March in Washington and gave his "I have a dream" speech, I'm proud of the recent nationwide Women's March of Washington, I'm proud of those who are letting their voices heard on injustices towards innocent people. Let us continue to peacefully resist and overcome hate. #lovetrumpshate
